Historic Overview

The story of Washington’s historic district is deeply rooted in the early settlement of Daviess County, where the region’s history began long before the city itself was established. Native American tribes, including the Piankeshaw and Delaware, first inhabited the area, with villages located near the White River—an important natural resource that would later shape the county’s growth.

By the early 1800s, settlers of European descent began arriving, drawn by fertile land and access to river transportation. A trading post established around 1803 in what is now Washington marked the beginning of a growing community. As settlement expanded, Daviess County was officially organized in 1818, with Washington designated as the county seat.

Throughout the 19th century, Washington developed into a regional hub for agriculture, commerce, and industry. Early growth was fueled by the timber industry and river-based trade, while Main Street quickly became the center of business and daily life. Historic buildings constructed during this time—many of which still stand today—reflect the craftsmanship and architectural styles of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Downtown Washington continued to evolve through the decades, with locally owned shops, service businesses, and gathering spaces shaping the character of the community. Areas like Main Street were once filled with clothing stores, specialty shops, and essential services that served generations of residents and visitors alike.

At the heart of the district stands the iconic Daviess County Courthouse, built in 1927–1928 in the Classical Revival style. For nearly a century, it has served as both a center of government and a symbol of civic pride, anchoring the downtown landscape.

Today, Washington’s historic district remains a vibrant reflection of its past. Many of its original structures have been preserved and repurposed, allowing visitors to experience the charm of a traditional downtown while enjoying modern shops, dining, and events. Masonic Building

Originally built in 1868, the Masonic Building is one of the oldest surviving structures downtown and represents the role of fraternal organizations in early community life. Its continued presence connects modern visitors to Washington’s earliest years.

Meredith Park Plaza

Meredith Park Plaza is a downtown park in Washington that honors the former Meredith Hotel, a cornerstone of Washington since 1880 and home to Civil War veteran and businessman William R. “Billy” Meredith. Lost to fire in 2007, the site now serves the community with a gazebo, fountain, picnic tables, benches, and preserved historic elements. The plaza is a gathering place for events, celebrations, and everyday enjoyment—linking downtown Washington's past to its future.

Peoples National Bank Building

Temple Court Building

U.S. Post Office
